Research Areas: Fishery stock assessment and management; development and testing of stock assessment methods; models of fishermen's behavior (e.g., fishing operations such as gear and fishing location choice).
Since August 1990, David has worked at the Hatfield Marine Science Center in Newport, Oregon as a faculty member with the Coastal Oregon Marine Experiment Station and the Department of Fisheries and Wildlife. He works closely with, and is partially supported by, the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife (ODFW) Marine Resources Program. David conducts and reviews groundfish stock assessments on behalf of ODFW and is involved in the development and evaluation of methods for fish stock assessment. Currently he serves as the Oregon representative on the Scientific and Statistical Committee of the Pacific Fishery Management Council. David also does research on the dynamics of fishery systems, particularly the responses of fishermen to changing conditions within the fisheries. He has teaching responsibilities for an upper division course in marine fisheries (FW 465/565) and has taught special courses in fishery stock assessment methods (FW 599).
