I am generally interested in where and how seabirds find food, as well as what seabird diets can tell us about ecosystem dynamics.
As an FRA in the Seabird Oceanography Lab, I work on a diverse set of projects generally following these themes. I lead the field component of the long-term monitoring work at Yaquina Head Outstanding Natural Area (Newport, OR) and at Pirate Cove (Depoe Bay, OR), examining the factors that influence the reproductive performance of Common Murres (Uria aalge) and Brandt's and Pelagic Cormorants (Urile penicillatus and U. pelagicus, respectively). Additionally, I am the primary contact for the Birds with Fish community science program, where we collect photographs of coastal waterbirds carrying fish donated by local photographers to help us study spatial and temporal trends in seabird diet composition. I also spend time conducting at-sea surveys for seabirds in Oregon's offshore waters, survey the Oregon coast for Marbled Murrelets (Brachyramphus marmoratus), censusing waterbird breeding colonies on the Columbia River using aerial imagery, and assisting on various projects deploying biologgers on Oregon seabirds.
