Coho Salmon

Coho salmon

Jessica Miller, Kathleen O'Malley, Carl Schreck

Latin name: Oncorhynchus kisutch

Taxonomic analysis of Northwest populations revealed stock structuring in coho salmon. This provided the first such groupings that are now part of the Endangered Species Act listing and recovery process. Other work concerning commercial aquaculture of this species developed methods for the induction of spawning hatchery broodstock by hormonal injection. This procedure is still the method of choice. Studies directed at enhancing survival of hatchery coho salmon following release was done in collaboration with the US Fish and Wildlife Service and demonstrated the importance of hatchery water flow rates in addition to space needs of the fish; this has led to the development of hatchery rearing protocols still in use today. Other studies demonstrated how coho could be conditioned to stress as a means of enhancing survival of hatchery fish.
